Journal of Clinical Psychiatry Study: Videra's Video AI Detects Tardive Dyskinesia More Reliably Than Human Raters
Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a movement disorder involving uncontrollable motions of the face, tongue, or limbs that can develop in people taking certain psychiatric medications long-term. It affects millions of Americans, yet it’s routinely missed: the movements can be subtle, and screening requires a trained clinician’s time. In a study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Videra Health and academic collaborators showed that AI can detect TD simply by analyzing a short video of the patient.
Across three studies of more than 350 patients, the AI correctly identified TD about 8 times out of 10, and notably, its judgments were more consistent than those of trained human observers, who often disagree with each other on the same patient. This research is the foundation of Videra’s TDScreen tool, which lets patients complete a TD check from home in under five minutes, making regular screening practical instead of something that only happens when a specialist is available.
